Job Summary
The UWM IEC Assistant Director (AD) will provide outreach, support, coaching and advocacy for marginalized students e.g. first-generation students, students of color, undocumented students and students of modest economic backgrounds. The IEC AD is responsible for providing co-curricular educational activities and intercultural leadership opportunities for campus community members within a social justice framework. This position will increase visibility, raise awareness and promote utilization of the IEC’s initiatives to all campus units and populations. The IEC AD is responsible for the coordination of student outreach and coaching, which includes but is not limited to coordination of hiring, training, and supervision, as well as, evaluation of student staff. This extends to serving as a resource person for information, referrals, and advocacy on behalf of marginalized students. In collaboration with Financial Aid, this position will provide leadership and coordination to the Lawton Scholars Program, a student success and retention initiative. The IEC AD will co-coordinate department assessment efforts as they relate to the department, division and university missions and values. The IEC AD will work with all units within the Centers for Advocacy and Student Engagement (CASE) to advance institutional investment in intercultural and social justice education.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- a minimum of one-year professional experience implementing diversity, inclusivity and/or social justice education in a higher education setting, the non-profit sector or the private sector.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher in College Student Personnel, Non-Profit Management, Organizational Leadership, Social Justice Education, Social work or related field.
- A minimum of two years of experience working in program development and coordination related to social justice, intercultural competency development and marginalized populations.
- Demonstrated experience managing student staff and/or volunteers.
- Demonstrated evidence of bilingual or multiple language fluency.
- Demonstrated evidence of in-depth knowledge of intersectionality and intercultural program development.
- Demonstrated evidence of commitment to diversity within higher education as a conduit for cultural growth and learning.
- Demonstrated evidence of commitment and interest in serving students at a diverse, research access institution.
