Our campus counseling and health services, accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, provides integrated, holistic care for students through our medical, counseling, and health promotion and wellness departments. We assist the UWM campus community through collaborative partnerships designed to enhance the university’s academic and community service mission and focus on our students’ well-being as an essential component to student success.

Job Summary

The Counseling Director serves as the leading mental health expert and resource to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus community. The Director works collaboratively with the other units within the Norris Health Center, a combined health, counseling and health promotion and wellness system serving 26,000 students and accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care since 2000. The Director also collaborates with multiple offices within the Division of Student Affairs, other campus departments, and academic units. This position reports to the Executive Director of Health and Well-being and is responsible for all services of the University Counseling Services (USC) of Norris Health Center. In addition to administrative responsibilities, the University Counseling Director has clinical responsibilities and provides short-term individual and group counseling, supervises advanced trainees, and oversees campus outreach efforts.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Masters or doctoral degree in Psychology, Counseling or Social Work

2. Currently holding a state license to practice psychotherapy

3. Minimum of six years post degree clinical experience in a mental health setting

4. Minimum of four years post degree of management experience in a mental health environment

Preferred Qualifications

1. Doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology

2. Clinical Experience in a college counseling center.

3. Progressive administrative experience addressing the growth in demand and increasing complexity of presenting conditions in a college counseling center.

4. Experience working with a young adult, underserved and high-risk population within a fast-paced, constantly changing environment.

5. Experience in management of a mental health clinic within a problem focused/brief treatment model

6. Experience supervising mental health staff and providing clinical supervision for trainees

7. Experience leading and participating in collaborative interdisciplinary networks across an organization.

8. Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with other staff and contribute to the patient care team.

9 Demonstrated ability to work effectively with racially, ethnically, sexually and economically diverse identities with a social justice approach.

10. Demonstrated ability to analyze and integrate best practices, population needs, outcome data, and trends in mental health care, and evolving standards and treatment methods in the profession.

11. Demonstrated ability to make decisions based upon alignment with and achievement of unit and mental health or healthcare system strategic goals, values, and initiatives and lead an organization through change.
