Our Design System Team is responsible for developing and maintaining the design system that underpins our products. We are seeking a Senior Product Designer to join us in creating a consistent and cohesive design language across all Docker products.

 


Job Description:

As a Senior Product Designer on the Design System Team, you will create and maintain a scalable design system for our developer tools, compile a cohesive and user-centric component library, and establish and improve design guidelines. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product managers, engineers, and other designers, to ensure that our design system is implemented consistently and effectively across all our products.

 


Responsibilities:
  • Develop the visual evolution of a scalable design system that supports the needs of all product teams
  • Identify design needs across the company and propose solutions that align with and improve the design system
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to ensure design system components are implemented correctly
  • Ensure that design assets are up-to-date, organized, and accessible to all team members, including the creation and maintenance of design guidelines, illustrations, and components
  • Collaborate with designers, product managers, and developers to understand user needs and design requirements
  • Operate across multiple teams to provide design system guidance and visual support
  • Participate in design critiques and provide feedback on design work, facilitating collaboration and ensuring alignment between design disciplines
  • Conduct user research to validate design ideas and continuously improve the design system
  • Stay up-to-date with design trends and emerging technologies, and apply this knowledge to our design system


Requirements/Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in UI/Visual design with a focus on design systems
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating a deep understanding of design systems and the ability to design developer tools for multiple platforms and devices
  • Advanced understanding of branding, hierarchy, typography, iconography, user-centered design, data visualization, and illustration
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and autonomously with cross-functional teams, and manage multiple tasks with attention to time zones and schedules
  • Ability to communicate design decisions effectively and explain complex design concepts to non-designers
  • Proficiency in design and prototyping tools such as Figma and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment is a plus
  • Experience with front-end development technologies such as HTML/CSS and Storybook is a plus

 

In your first 30 days:

  • You will be welcomed with a first-in-class onboarding experience that includes equipment setup, a sweet swag package, and a collaborative training program
  • You will learn how to navigate through design system at Docker, including Figma and Storybook
  • You will meet with product designers to understand how they interact with the design system and begin to identify pain points
  • You will document the differences between components in the Figma and Storybook libraries for future remedying
  • At the end of your first month, you will have a proficient grasp of the tools and activities necessary to be successful in your role

 

In Your First 60 Days:

  • During your second month, you will be laser-focused on polishing the component library in Figma (remedying discrepancies between storybook, fixing bugs, and establishing the beta library)
  • You will have connected with every product designer and understand their design system needs
  • You will improve the component documentation in Storybook
  • At the end of your second month, you will have polished the Figma component library and be ready to consider cosmetics

 

By 90 Days:

  • In month three, you will be confident in answering any questions about the design system and ready to guide designers through component customization or new pattern creation and using the figma libraries
  • You will continue efforts to improve the component library and its functionality
  • You will begin to ideate future possibilities for our component library’s aesthetic and visual identity which will differentiate us from MUI (in collaboration with Marketing)
  • You will be ready to independently operate at full speed
  • You work closely with product designers on design system usage and provide design system reviews when needed
